| Said, Edward W. 【サイード, エドワード・W.】 (1935/11/01-2003/09/25) |

1935年11月01日、イギリス委任統治下のパレスチナ西エルサレムに生まれる。1947年、同地を出国。エジプトで暮らした後、1951年、アメリカ合衆国へ渡る。1957年、プリンストン大学にて文学士を取得。1960年、ハーヴァード大学にて修士号を取得。1964年、同大学にて博士号取得。専攻は比較文学。1966年のコンラッド論「ジョウセフ・コンラッドと自伝の虚構」でデビュー。出世作である『オリエンタリズム』（1978年）では、元来「東洋趣味・東洋研究」といった意味で用いられていた「オリエンタリズム」（Orientalism）という言葉を、西洋による東洋理解・支配のありようを分析するための鋭利な批判的概念にしたてあげ、後の帝国主義研究、文学研究などに大きな影響を与えた。他方でパレスチナ問題に精力的にかかわり、同問題に関する情況分析的な発言・著作も多数ある。その姿勢は、講演『知識人とは何か』（出版は1994年）で語る知識人像にあらわれている。また、『音楽のエラボレーション』（1991年）としてまとめられた講演では、聴衆を前にしてピアノを演奏しつつ楽曲論を展開するなど、音楽への造詣も披露している。コロンビア大学教授（Parr Professor of English and Comparative Literature）。2003年09月25日、死去。
