■略歴

1932年7月31日、アメリカ合衆国コロラド州デンヴァーに生まれる。1946年、ウィスコンシン州に移る。ウィスコンシン大学入学。ローズ奨学金により1952年から1959年まで、オックスフォード大学に留学。1959年、博士号取得。同年、カリフォルニア大学助教授に就任。1967年、同大学教授。研究と作品の発表に身を捧げる哲学者であるとともに社会的事象への関心も高く、大学行政家としても知られている。
